Manuscripts

The present list of 148 manuscripts containing Patrizi’s literary works is a finding list only. It includes items extracted from Kristeller’s Iter Italicum, all of the relevant catalogues of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, and a selection of catalogues on paper and online describing collections in Siena, Florence, Milan, Naples, Venice, London, Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Berlin, and Munich.

The catalogue work for this list is ongoing and we expect to add to it in due course as funding allows, but we welcome any information from other scholars about Patrizi manuscripts not on this list, or corrections to data given in the list. Please contact the site owner with any information you may have and we will be happy to list you as the source of any verified corrections or new entries.

The list includes manuscripts containing letters to and from Patriz as listed by De Capua. For detailed descriptions of manuscripts containing the “Foligno corpus” of Patrizi’s letters, we refer the reader to the detailed descriptions in De Capua. We have not attempted to give a full bibliography for every manuscript, but the citations given here will ordinarily lead the reader to the principal library catalogues and some of the specialized literature. In a number of cases our descriptions, though condensed, borrow verbatim from Iter. Manuscripts with an asterisk (*) have been inspected in situ by James Hankins.

Thickly annotated in a second hand, marginal notes. Some Greek quotations are transliterated into Roman characters, a few are crudely written in Greek (added later); some quotations in Greek are omitted. A long Greek quote at end of 8.5 is added by another hand. The main text is copied in five or six hands of the later 15^th c., taking turns, but the annotator is the same throughout. All the hands are Italian. The annotation becomes much less thick after book four. De Capua, p. 23, 194, 215.

Preface to Sixtus IV and the second preface to Siena in another (later?) hand from the first preface to Siena. Ff. 7r-233v (same hand as ff. 4-6): Books 1-9, with prefaces. Corrections in Patrizi’s hand, mostly filling in words skipped by scribe. This copy has been annotated by several hands. This copy is cleaner, less thickly annotated, than C1. Rubricated notabilia in small caps. The Greek added is more legibly in this copy. The codex leaves blank space between each book to add rubricated chapter titles, which were never added.

Round humanistic bookhand, with rubricated notabilia in all caps and minuscule., as in other mss. above. Greek written contemporaneously by the scribe. The rubricator (the same scribe as text hand) also writes Greek words and phrases occasionally. Space left blank for decorated initials.

De regno. In this copy all the prefaces to Alfonso of Calabria have been left out (but with space left to add them) and there is no mention of the dedicatee whatsoever. Possibly a copy made for the Piccolomini. De Capua, pp. 208-211.
